A memorable Tented Safari Camping experience at Udawalawe National Park……..

If it is Sri Lankan elephants you are after, then there is no better alternative to the Udawalawe National Park. An elephant sighting is guaranteed.

Sri Lanka Safari Elephant BathingThe Udawalawe National Park is the only place in the world where an elephant sighting is guaranteed on every game drive. It is an excellent place to observe elephant behaviour and to get up close and personal with these amazing animals in herds of about 50 to 100 elephants being sighted regularly. There are also 183 species of birds and 45 species of mammals recorded at Udawalawe.

The Location

udawalawe siteOur Mahoora tented safari campsite is located in a thicket on the eastern boundary of Udawalawe National Park and is surrounded by a bush forest. Tents are spread out in order to ensure complete privacy and a true wilderness setting.  As the south or west boundaries of the park have no forest patches and are densely populated, our campsite location was carefully handpicked to amplify the feeling of being in the midst of nature.

The distance between the entrance of the park and the campsite is a mere 21km, and of this 15km follows the park boundaries where animal sightings are common, and the rest takes you through semi wilderness or pastoral villages.

An early morning drive to the park entrance or evening drive back to the campsite can easily be made in to a mini safari, based on the client's interest. The drive can take as little as 20 minutes, but a slower drive to observe the surroundings will be anywhere between half an hour to 40 minutes in duration. Furthermore, our naturalists carry red beam torches which help detect animals even during the dark especially when entering the park.

The unique advantages of the Mahoora Udawalawe in brief

Udawalawe Wildlife SafariAs this campsite is located just next to the park’s boundary, guests are able to experience something very similar to living inside the park. If you are fortunate you may even encounter wildlife in the campsite itself. We have elephants visiting the campsite frequently.

The complete Mahoora experience with luxury Jeeps and expert game drivers, professional naturalists, snacks / beverages / water /tea & coffee  are available unlimited. What’s more a safari with our professional team is a unique and holistic experience. We believe such experience can be provided by us, as we are well experienced and has the expertise. In general, a hotel will not be able to offer the same services as their area of expertise is very different.

If there is a full day safari, we are able to provide a complete hot lunch served inside the park without returning to the campsite. This saves time and energy spent on traveling to the camp for lunch.

For a client who is staying in a hotel, time saved would be anything between 3 to 4 hours. However, clients have the option to go back for their meal and return for the evening safari after enjoying an exquisite lunch.

udawalawe serviceWe can also extend customized services for clients. (Family safaris / honeymoon safaris / photography safaris etc)

During certain times of the year, there are a few “chena” plots scattered around the areas near the campsite. Chena is the local term for traditional slash and burn cultivation used for seasonal crops which is a common means of earning a living in the area. Clients have the option of visiting these sites that are of a moderate distance, during their day or night nature walks, and gain better understanding of rural Sri Lanka. This is also a service offered without any additional charges.

Your stay in a Mahoora Tented Safari Camp is completely carbon neutral.

“Pack in and Pack out”

All of our tents are set-up just prior to your arrival, and are moved out after your departure, thereby minimizing our impact on the environment. This “Pack in and Pack out” aspect combined with all our other green initiatives; guarantee to make your stay with Mahoora the most environment friendly accommodation in Sri Lanka.

Though the tents are set up far away from local villages, bear in mind that this area is very quiet, so the distant sound of a radio or temple chant may sometimes carry to the campsite. These occurrences are rare but we would like to keep our customers informed in case such situations arise.
